OKBET ESPORTS EVENT

OKBET Esports Event, China has failed to reach the finals of the League of Legends World Championship, the OKBET Esports Event industry’s premier competition, for the first time since 2018, sparking outrage among Chinese video game enthusiasts online.

The JD Gaming (JDG) squad, funded by Chinese e-commerce company JD.com, fell 1-3 to South Korea’s T1 team on Saturday in their 2022 League Worlds best-of-five semi-final match at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. OKBET Esports Event T1 has progressed to the finals, which will be place on November 5 in San Francisco, and the victorious team will get the coveted Summoner’s Cup trophy as well as US$2.225 million in pool prize money.

“Our Season 12 adventure comes to an end here,” the JDG team stated in a statement released on Twitter in English and Weibo in Chinese. “Unfortunately, we were not the “selected one”… Nobody wanted to win the next round ticket more than we did at OKBET Esports Event.”

The latest Chinese esports team to reach the event finals was Shanghai-based Edward Gaming, who defeated South Korean reigning champion DWG Kia to win the 2021 League Worlds championship last November in Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital at the OKBET Esports Event. FunPlus Phoenix of China and Invictus Gaming of China won the League Worlds championship in 2019 and 2018, respectively.

JDG was founded in 2017 when JD.com bought the squad and position of the QG Reapers team in the League of Legends Pro League (LPL), Tencent Holdings’ top-level professional esports competition in China at OKBET Esports Event. The top three finishers in the LPL playoffs get automatic spots in the League Worlds group stage, while the fourth seed in the LPL enters via an earlier play-in tournament.

JDG competed in the 2022 League Worlds with Chinese competitors Top Esports, Edward Gaming, and Royal Never Give Up after winning the 2022 LPL Summer competition. Riot Games’ League Worlds began this year on September 29, with 24 teams from across the globe playing in matches conducted in several locations throughout the United States and Mexico at OKBET Esports Event.

While its three Chinese competitors were ousted early in the event, JDG advanced to the 2022 League Worlds semi-finals after defeating DWG Kia and European teams Rogue and G2 Esports. Following JDG’s semi-finals setback, increasing conjecture and online debate concerning China’s three-hour weekly video gaming limit for players under the age of 18 indicated worries about the mainland’s esports business.

“Clearly, there was a discrepancy in their talents,” said a Weibo user with the name “Voyager” on Sunday, referring to the JDG and T1 teams’ abilities. “JDG used up all of their talents, but there was no way to win.” That was the primary takeaway from many esports enthusiasts in China, the world’s biggest video game market, who vented their displeasure on social media after JDG’s semi-finals setback.

“We need to go back and become apprentices again,” stated LPL pundit Wang Duoduo in a Weibo post, lamenting the lack of an LPL squad in the League Worlds finals. The National Press and Publication Administration, China’s primary watchdog for video gaming and other types of online media, imposed a regulation in August last year limiting gaming time for gamers under the age of 18 to 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. only on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and statutory holidays at OKBET Esports Event.

This makes it tough for the country’s esports industry to create and train under-18 groups of players while also maintaining its burgeoning local fan base. In esports, 18 is widely seen as a mature age for a professional player, since the majority of them retire in their early twenties.

Four of the five players on the finals-bound T1 squad, for example, are under the age of 20. Choi Woo-jethe, widely known as “Zeus,” their youngest player, is just 18 years old. In contrast, all JDG players are above the age of 21.
